My dear ~~firstname~~ and Pet Parent.

Woof!  Woof!  Happy New Year!

Oh here it is – already the second day of the new year.  I hope that you my dear furry friend and pet parents brought in 2008 in grand style!

Fireworks … yes we watched them, but WOW! Did you see the show they put on in Sydney, Australia?  I heard mommie saying something about spending next new year’s eve there …. Hmmn … don’t know about that.  Australia has very strict quarantine rules – up to 6 months!  Sounds like I’ll be living in the lap of luxury at a local doggie resort!  Will keep my ears to ground for the best places in the country and you’ll be reading about them right here at BooBoo Speaks!   Of course you want to know about the ones that are close to you --- so, tell me where you want me to do the sleuthing for you.

On New Year’s day went with mommie and her friends to watch the polar bear swim … ok. There were no polar bears!  Just people swimming in the cold ocean.  There were more "watchers" than swimmers, but I took the opportunity to do some socializing with other pooches on the beach.  Some of them actually went into the freezing water with their Parents!  Of course, they would be the Labradors, Chesapeakes, Retrievers, Duck Tollers … well you get the idea.

Me?  No way.  Besides I was all dressed up in my new duds --- from my own line of  coats and collars.  I can tell you that there were a lot of us well dressed canines there and I can honestly say that I held pride of place with my Good Dog ensemble and snuggly new Cordura.

Boo’s Barkery – wagalicious treats!

Now on to more important things… You know when I took over as Top Dog of Sit BooBoo Sit, I immediately set out a pack of hounds on the trail to find a good supplier of treats.  I knew Sherlock, my top bloodhound, would not let me down.  Well, Sherlock came back with a line of yummy treats lovingly baked in small batches by Bone Appetit.  These are quality treats made from the best natural ingredients without any artificial coloring or preservatives. I know these must be good … Sherlock returned with a few more pounds on his usually trim frame.

Click on Boo’s Barkery. Better have your mommie stock up - once you taste these you’ll want to be on your best behavior!  They also make excellent "house" gifts when you go visiting your friends.

Why choose natural treats for your dog?

by Susan Rice, Bone Appetit Bakery, Nashville, Indiana

"Natural" means existing in or produced by nature; not artificial or imitation.  Natural treats for dogs contain nothing artificial: no preservatives, no added sugars or salt, no artificial colorings.

For ten years, I have owned a store that specializes in natural dog treats.  I’ve heard just about every comment and sentiment from customers about their dogs.  Most of our customers recognize and relish the value of high quality, all-natural treats for their dogs.  But others use some pretty questionable logic to justify what they feed their dogs:

  • "My dog will eat anything, even rocks!" (or furniture, or you fill in the blank)
  • "My dog just gulps his food; he doesn’t even taste it!"
  • "My dog won’t eat anything except sausages!" (or you fill in the blank

You’ve heard it said.  Maybe you’ve even said it!  These statements are no doubt true, but they are certainly not a justification for buying treats or foods for your dog that are highly processed and contain high levels of fat, preservatives, chemicals, and who-knows-what toxic substances.

Dogs are like us to the extent that they-are-what-they-eat.  A proper canine diet will help to prevent illness, provide good energy, great shine and texture to the fur, healthy skin, joints, bones, eyes, and ears.  We are seeing more and more evidence that highly processed, high fat diets loaded with chemicals are doing harm to human bodies, and canine ones as well.

In general, the best diet for your dog is not dissimilar to your own.  Here are a few basics:

  • The less processing, the better; processing removes many nutritional elements from food
  • Think fresh.  The longer food items sit on shelves, the more nutrients are lost, and the more preservatives are added by manufacturers to try to prevent items from deteriorating in quality.
  • Fruits and vegetables provide excellent nutrition for dogs.  They are also great low calorie snacks.
  • Provide variety.  You wouldn’t eat a diet of only corn flakes!  You’d survive, but it wouldn’t be very interesting or healthy.   Provide your dog with different brands and different flavors.  Snacks are a great way to introduce variety to your dog.  Natural treats come in a huge variety of flavors, many containing fruits and vegetables.
